This mysterious and mystical state tucked between Tibet and Myanmar (Burma) is one of the most sparsely populated in India. The Himalayan range running along its northern border is divided by four huge river valleys. The Diabang, Subansiri, Siang (Upper Brahmaputra), and Lohit all flow south to form the immense Brahmaputra River.
The densely forested hills and mountains of Arunachal are home to at least 65 different tribal groups, most of whom are of Tibetan or Thai-Burmese origin. These people offer an amazing insight into tribal culture, using ancient tools for farming and hunting. Festivals giving thanks to their Gods for successful harvests usually consist of impressive dances with tribes people often displaying impressive headgear and jewellery. The tribes are highly democratic, each having its own organised institution which maintains law and order, settles disputes and overseas all activities concerning the welfare of their village.
