Ladakh |
Ladakh, ‘the land of high passes’, is bound by the two highest and biggest mountain ranges in the world, the Karakoram in the north and the Great Himalaya in the south. The Ladakh and Zanskar Ranges also traverse the area.
During the high summer months Ladakh is the place to be as it avoids the harsh heat and monsoon experienced on the southern slopes of the Himalaya. In winter the high mountain passes, some exceeding 5000m, are closed due to snow and the whole region becomes one of the most inhospitable places on earth with temperatures reaching minus 20ºC.
Ladakh, often referred to as ‘little Tibet’, is characterised by Buddhist culture, and spectacular gumpas (Buddhist monasteries) can be spotted perched high on valley walls or hillsides. Many people believe that following the Cultural Revolution in Tibet, Ladakh has the only true Buddhist culture remaining in the world today. |
