A short easy trek running parallel to the high Himalayas. Good views all the way, picturesque camping by the lake at Devariyatal and some beautiful deciduous forests. In the early spring the rhododendron forests glow red as the flowers bloom. The views from the Chandrashilla top will stay in one's memory for a very long time. An easy introductory trek with gradual ascents and descents that are ideal for slower walkers.
On arrival to India you will be met at the airport. Depending on your personal itinerary you will be transferred to the train station or hotel.
Day 1: Delhi to Rishikesh (330 m): 5/6 hrs
Board the morning train departing New Delhi at 7:00 a.m. Reach Haridwar at 11:30 a.m. Transfer to our beach camp on the river Ganges near Rishikesh, a bustling pilgrim township, a popular meditation centre and the Yoga Capital of the world. Spend the afternoon rafting or explore the township and attend the aarti (evening prayers) by the banks of the river Ganges. Overnight camp.
Day 2: Rishikesh to Sari to Devariyatal (2440 m): 8 hrs
Drive upstream of Rishikesh for about six hours along the Ganges and Alaknanda rivers. We then enter the Mandakini valley until we reach Sari. When we start walking it's gradual uphill for roughly two hours to the beautiful lake of Devariyatal.
Day 3: Devariyatal to Chopta (3000 m): 6/7 hrs
The trail goes through the dense forest and stays on the ridge all the way to Tali. From here we descend for a while to cross a stream and then climb back up gradually to reach Chopta. Chopta is located in an idyllic setting with beautiful meadows surrounded by dense rhododendron forests.
Day 4: Chopta to Tungnath (3680 m) to Chandrashilla Top (4130 m) to Chopta: 8 hrs
Start early in the morning and climb up to the temple of Tungnath and beyond. Tungnath, one of the Shiva temples, is the highest temple in the Garhwal Himalaya and there are spectacular views of the surrounding plains from here. The summit of Chandrashilla Peak provides a breathtaking 360 degree view of the Himalaya. We descend back to Chopta to enjoy a well earned evening meal.
Day 5: Drive Chopta to Haridwar to Delhi: 13 hrs
Drive to the train station in Haridwar and take the evening train, reaching Delhi by 10:30 p.m. Trip ends.
Note: Please contact us for sightseeing in Delhi, or a trip to the Taj Mahal at the start or end of this trip. We can also tailor this trip with a rafting expedition or wildlife safari.
All itineraries exclude international flight days. The duration of this trip is calculated from Delhi back to Delhi again.
