Sikkim
|
This jewel like mountain state is dominated by the looming profile of Khangchendzonga (8598m), the world’s third and India’s highest mountain. Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, Sikkim has a border with Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan.
Trekking in the area is spectacular with lush valleys, rhododendron groves and dense forests, all in the shadow of the largest mountains in the world. Buddhism was introduced to the area in the 15th century and the hillsides are now dotted with ancient monasteries and fluttering prayer flags.
The local language is Nepali, and the majority of the people are of Nepali or Tibetan origin, making Sikkim another Indian state with its own unique character and customs.
